Dreams and Marriage

I was talking to a couple of friends, a man and a woman, about dreams. I was telling him that I've dreamed about getting married, and he looked at me like I had three heads. I asked him what was wrong, and he says "You dream about getting married? That's weird!" Naturally I asked whether or not he dreams of getting married and he told me no, never. I asked her about it, and she said yes, she's had that dream and described her princess-like gown. I smiled, knowing exactly what she meant, and he stared at us like we were speaking a dead language. Then he informed me that men don't dream about getting married. Now, I was curious.

I called my cousin and asked her. She said she'd only heard of men dreaming about getting married if they were nervous, you know, cold feet. So I asked another male friend of mine, and told me that no, never about getting married, but he has dreamed about already being married. Ok. So now the women are 3-3 and the men are 0-2. I asked a few more guy friends and the responses I got were nearly the same, "Never in my life. Sounds more like a nitemare."

Another male friend responded, that he dreams about marrying Alicia Keys every night, but when I asked him be serious about this because I was doing research, and he said, "But on a serious note, I think it's because marriage is viewed more as a time for a women to become princesses. For me, I think it's viewed as another day, until! they see the woman walk down the aisle..."

I just asked yet another male friend with me, "No. Never happens."

On the other hand, most of my women friends have been dreaming about that day for as long as they can remember. They know all the details from the cut of the dress to the flavor of the cake, who's invited, and how the venue will be lit. I, personally, don't ever see the groom, he's there, but I can't see his face, but I know what he's wearing.

Wow.

So men don't seem to dream about getting married.

Ah ha!

Ah! So the answer to my writer's block, is not only to write about anything that comes to mind, no matter what it is...and to remember to put myself into each part of whatever it is that I'm writing--to keep being inspired by the big picture while immersing myself in the tidbits.

For a week I haven't seriously worked on the story that I'm writing. Today, after staring at the paper, I took a step back, reread, made notes, asked questions. I almost forgot that these characters and their desires were alive somewhere in my mind. I almost forgot that the art of storytelling is really about a sequence of events which work together successfully. After I figured out, for now, motivation, audience, and how the characters would like to be remembered suddenly my fingers took off, and I had to grab a notepad.

Just keep writing, just keep writing.

Something will come to you.

(I should have known.)

Esperanto

So, I'm sitting in this cafe (see title for name) in the Vill, chilling w my homeboy. We have the lappies out and are participating in the past-time that's sweeping the nation: mutual exclusion. There are enough people in here for us to both socialize with, instead, we sit drinking coffee, eating pastries, and practically ignoring the real world to engage in the virtual. I'd like to say this never happens, but it happens all the time! I remember sitting side by side with an old friend of mine as we both clicked away on our laptops. After a while I'd say, hey I'm going back to my apartment, I'll see you tomorrow...and I left: That was a satisfying evening of chilling with this friend. Now, I could play devil's advocate and say that we knew each other so well that we didn't need to communicate, which would have been true at the time, but then...why are we i.m.ing instead of saying, oh yeah, I like that too.

Life in virtuality is fun. Don't get me wrong. I visit my fair share of social networking sites, read and send emails galore, peruse cool new places to go online...and I spend a good amount of time doing it, because for me, writing is a much easier way of communicating, but my question is: Is all this virtual socialization killing my, and may others' ability to engage with people in person? Now, I'm not saying that I'm bored with my companion, no, not at all. I would have liked to have been taking advantage of $3 beers, but hey, it's all good. But something I keep hearing more and more is that people would rather socialize online than see each other. Oh whatever, so and so can -fb, myspace, twitter-me if they really want to talk. What? Really? I mean, ok, I'm guilty too, but you know...nothing beats coming out to kick it with your people. As the weather is getting warm, I find myself longing for the European way of enjoying the outdoors...in a cafe, at a river...where other people have also left their electronics at home to partake in life, the reality.

I came out on this beautiful day, and find myself in a cafe...with other people, on their laptops. I wanted to go to the park. For the record, I'm not saying that the whole world is now filled to bursting with people who cannot socialize away from a screen, I'm just wondering, what are we losing by doing this? Is this going to come back and rear its ugly head at us, like I suspect the use of headphones will? Believe me, my generation is probably going to go deaf early. Thank you Walkman. What is the lasting impact of this age of digital communication?

As I sip my coffee and ponder these lines, all these other thoughts are coming to mind about handwriting, letter writing (an art form in its death throes) and other modes of communication that are so...instant. What are we doing?

And now what?

You know when you're looking so forward to something, but upon its arrival, you wonder what was I thinking? or Is this what I wanted? or What am I doing here?

It's never easy when things don't go to (mental) plan, and you're left wondering Why?

When questions have questions answered by doubts, what is the next appropriate course of action?

So Far Gone

So Far Gone

On the bus, ignoring everyone and listening to (Bria's Interlude, damn this) new Drake album is hot too, thinking...Thinking.

"All I wanna do is give u all of me now, are u ready, are u ready?" Damn this bus is moving fast, fast like the thoughts in my head, like the one that says stop now, that beer has u a lil tispy, u know u don't drink like that anymore, and the words ur typing are pure id...ego frustration.
But...but you have a lot to spill...Lookin out of the window makes u dizzy..."u look nice and ur frame makes me wanna bowl a strike, well alright, yes I might, know what fuck it yes I will, I am more than what u bargained for and nothin less than real, put it to u like...it's ok it's ok it's ok..." ("Uptown")...
I'm on, on, on and now there's no stoppin, no offin' like invincible mafia, made made made to set it up. Oh shit, the beat's got me in rap mode, head boppin lines droppin thoughts woppin, I mean whippin the hell out of me like massas afraid of spiritual rituals...what was that?
I don't even know now, what started out a story is turnin into a jumble of synaptical cyanide, killin the original intentions flowers in the attic style...V, C an' if I drew a picture of the constant sibling rivalry of sister thoughts, it'd look like, like question marks. Detective setting engaged; decipher my meaning, cuz it keeps hiding from myself and maybe some mysteries are better left cold cases, but here's some clarity, spiritual care-ity: if u need me, I'm here.
